Texas Bishops Offer Holy Hour of Prayer for Hurricane Response
In response to Hurricane Harvey, Texas parishes who are able to do so, please ring church bells at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7, to call Catholics to an hour of prayer or Eucharistic adoration. Those unable to attend a parish service, please join in prayer wherever you are at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7, in an hour of prayer and spiritual communion for all who are impacted by the hurricane. Catholic Charities Still Receiving Donations for Storm Victims at Office
Financial contributions and other items to aid victims of Hurricane Harvey are still being collected at the Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley office in San Juan. Items needed include non-perishable food, school supplies, pet food, personal hygiene items, bottled water, cleaning supplies, baby formula and diapers and gift cards. No clothing will be accepted. Donations can be received during office hours, 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Catholic Charities office, 400 N. Virgen de San Juan Blvd., on the south side of the Basilica grounds.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish to Mark 50 Years
Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Harlingen will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding as a parish in the Diocese of Brownsville by the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary (SS.CC) on Saturday, Sept. 9 with a Mass with Bishop Flores and a dinner. Tickets for the dinner will go on sale Aug. 15 for non-parishioners. Tickets are already on sale for parishioners. Cost of the dinner is $5. You must have a ticket to get into the dinner. The dinner will take place at the Harlingen Community Center, 201 E. Teachers of the Faith to Gather on Sept. 16
The Catechetical Convocation is set for Saturday, Sept. 16 at the McAllen Convention Center. All catechists serving the Diocese of Brownsville’s parishes, mission churches and Catholic schools are invited and encouraged to participate in this day of prayer, reflection and fellowship. Presentations will be available in both English and Spanish.

Holy Family Parish to Celebrate 50th Anniversary
Holy Family Parish will mark its 50th year as a parish on Sept. 16 with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Daniel E. Flores at 5:30 p.m., followed by a banquet and entertainment 7-11 p.m. at the Edinburg Activity Center at 123 E. Palm Drive. Corazón Puro First, Second Stage Retreats Announced
Stage 1 Retreat: Chastity (Sept. 15-17) – The Corazón Puro First Stage Retreat is based on the teachings of the Theology of the Body. This encounter retreat focuses on recognizing our God-given dignity and provides formation to understand the meaning of our bodies. Must attend three monthly meetings to be able to join Stage 1 retreat. The retreat will be held at 1501 W. Adams St., Brownsville. The cost is $60 per person.

San Juan Nursing Home’s Annual Gala Set for Sept. 28
San Juan Nursing Home’s annual Gala Dinner and Silent Auction will be held 6:30-10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 at the Memorial Event Center in Edinburg. Bishop Daniel Flores will be the guest speaker, and the organization’s Man and Woman of the Year will be honored.

Protecting God’s Children Announcement
The diocesan plan is for all people who work with children to have viewed the safety awareness DVD: “Protecting God’s Children,” to submit to a DPS background check, and sign the code of ethics. This now needs to be refreshed/redone every five years. Second, religious education leaders are to plan and present a “Touching Safety” lesson during both the fall and spring to all children from kindergarten to 12th grade. Finally, parishes will present safety awareness material to all parents who have their children in either the First Communion or Confirmation classes.
